For the fun of it. I know it doesn't seem very fun to store items and then get raided, but you need to build your bases in locations people don't usually visit. Usually I don't store any loot in my base, I just use it as a means to get back to Alberton. If you do want to store loot then I would recommend either building an underwater base, building in a discreet location, or building a sky base (that abides by the global rules.)

Keep it small, you'd be surprised how many lockers you can fit in 1x1. And a good location to hide a wee base would be somewhere near pirates cove.

I actually created a Steam discussion about this. Base building is rather obsolete at this point. Raiding has become way too easy. I don't even bother building bases anymore. And honestly, base building is one of my favorite parts of the game. Kind of sad to see it go unloved ...
