This is done to encourage actual playing and RP, as opposed to relying on the shop for everything. There was a post by Stan about this exact same thing a few months ago. Mushy told him to get his shit together, go out there and chop some wood.

I always wondered why it costs me 300 dollars to buy a birch log, but then it costs me 250 to buy a tool that could get more of these for cheaper.
